as the skin thickens the dark rings do get darker on most hypos, and on some adults it can be pretty hard to tell--at least, let's say 99% of people might look at an animal, not knowing it might be a hypo, and might never suspect it was.
I hope that wasn't confusing.
Anyway, there are only two good ways to know, in ;your circumstance: one is slow--test breeding. The other is to rely on what was seen when the snake was young. Frankly, the person who hatched it should have known immediately which babies were hypos and which weren't--it's that obvioius at hatching, even with just the tip of the snout showing through a slit in the egg. So i'd press the breeder for info--were there ANY in the clutch that looked diff from others? etc. Barring any useful info from that source, i'd conclude from what you've said (black was lighter, looked like in shed when it wasn't) that it IS a hypo. But i'd NEVER sell the animal as a hypo based on that--you can draw that conclusion for your own planning and anticipation, but you're not 100% sure and can't be, thus the animal shouldn't be sold as a hypo.
