In 2000, I started brumating my AD hondos late September (Fall weather was very cold here in Canada that year) They were taken out of the big sleep mid-January. I was aiming for an early egg production. My proven adults had always been brumated from Dec. 1st to March 1st and would start copulating in April with first eggs laid early June.

That year, even with the early brumation, they only started laying eggs early June as they had done in past years. The anticipated early babies did not happen that year...

In 01, I repeated this early brumation at the end of Sept. with a single 30 month old pair. They were brought up Jan. 1st, the female produced her first clutch April 10th and hatchlings emerged Mid-June.

I have since stopped the early brumation and all adults go down Dec. 1st.

My observation based on above is that IF proven adults are pre-conditionned to brumate, copulate and lay eggs around the same time every year, it is next to impossible to get an earlier production. With my limited results from that one pair. I beleive IF a first time attempt with a young pair, early production is possible.

Great question Terry! Would be nice to hear from others...
