I am not an expert, however your father is not really wrong. I have found that some leos eat more or less than others. I give mine as much as they will eat each night and then take the extras out in the morning. If they eat all of them, maybe put a few more in. If they dont, offer a few less. Also it is a good idea to leave a small dish of calcium in with your gecko. I personally have never seen my geckos lap it up, but I dont watch them 24 hours a day. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Also make sure that you are coating the crickets with the calcium just to make sure that your gek is getting enough. It is also advisable to add a few more hids. I have a pair of leos in a fairly large enclosure. There are three hides. One over the under the tank heater, one on the cool end, and one hide with moist peat moss inside. The humid hide helps the geckos shed their skin when needed. The best thing you can do is read as much as possible and let your dad read it too. Here is a good care sheet online. Also check out the Leopard Gecko Manual. Well, sorry for the long post, but don't give your dad a hard time
