I used this method last year but just on 2 eggs. I had them in a homemade incubator made from a styrofoam cooler, pickle jar and an aquarium heater.
I think one of the problems people may be having is that the temp change could be too drastic and it is shocking the eggs. I raised mine over the course of about a week from 82º up to 88-90º just for the last 2 weeks of incubation. I left them at 82 for around 5 weeks before making the changes.
I had good luck with it myself, but I can see why so many people are worried about it... there are a lot of people on this board that have had bad experiences with this method and nobody wants to deal with deformed or dead hatchlings.
