I didn't like the look of paper towels as substrate, plus the little crix would sometimes crawl under to hide, but didn't want to take the chance of impaction with sand or bark. My solution was to switched to tiles, a suggestion I read on this forum. We went to Lowe's and splurged on on some fairly upper end slate tiles that are very naturalistic looking. For the 30" x 12" enclosure it took 3 tiles, and they cut the third one to size for free. The whole deal cost about $8 and it looks GREAT.
As far as the moist hide, I really don't know what to use besides paper towels. The moist hide is the least attractive thing in my setup, so we are brain storming on how to put in something that fits in with our rocky desert theme.
