they are much cleaner, much easier to keep alive, takes less space, etc. If you can't or don't want to switch to mealworms, then I don't know what you can do. When I had crickets, I would clean their cage every week by taking them out of the cage, throwing away all non-reuseable items, and using bleach and water to clean the cage out. I would also try and clean out any dead crickets, and change the egg crate as needed and the cage didn't smell bad for up to a week (then I would clean it). But crickets just became too much of a hassel, so I switch to mealworms.
