We are in New Mexico. The New Mexico fish and game website is a good resource. I'm pretty sure for most species (check the website for exceptions) collection is ok in non-protected areas as long as it is not for commercial resale (you need a permit for that)--but personal use is fine. There is a reptile show in Albuquerque 3x per year--next one is march 22-23--Howard Jonson Convention center I-40 and Eubank NE--you'll see it from the exit. AZ and Colorado also have herp shows.
If you are in Albuquerque there is also an active herp society. And a herp specialty shop. And the International Rattlesnake Museum.
