Reptile thief gets 3 1/3 to 7 years in prison

December 5, 2002, 12:12 PM EST

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 3 1/3 to 7 years in prison for stealing reptiles from a pet store in July.

Arzie Wade of Buffalo, convicted in October of burglary, broke in to the Blue Lagoon pet store, in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga, and stole pythons, boa constrictors and a Nile monitor lizard. Police used fingerprints and DNA evidence from blood found on a smashed shop door.

The jury found Wade not guilty of three cases where birds were stolen from Buffalo homes last year.

Prosecutors said the birds and lizard have been recovered, but Wade refused to reveal the snakes' whereabouts.
