Lexington County Council holding exotic pet hearing Tuesday
(Lexington-AP) Nov. 11, 2002 - Members of the Lexington County Council say their primary concern in establishing an exotic animals ban is protecting residents, but some of those residents say the ban would mean they would have to get rid of their family pets.
The council is holding a public hearing Tuesday on proposal to ban large cats, hippos, elephants and other animals that most people only see at the zoo.
Sean Bennett, 15, of Irmo, says he'll fight to keep the 40 pet snakes in his family's garage. Most of County Council members say they would allow snakes, but reptile bans have been discussed.
The council also would allow owners who are licensed through the US Agriculture Department to keep their animals.
The council proposed the ban after two pet lions got loose this summer in a community near Swansea.
