In Reply to: GA Press: Lexington County plan could leash exotic pets posted by W von Papineäu on September 11, 2002 at 18:44:17:

:THE STATE (Columbia, Georgia) 10 September 02 Lexington County plan could leash exotic pets - Proposal would bar keeping of animals that could attack people (Tim Flach)
:Animals such as bears, lions, wolves, apes and some snakes would be banned as pets under restrictions Lexington County Council will consider today.
:The plan taking shape is aimed at barring pets that could attack people. Lexington County's plan comes after a stir in Sandy Run about two lions and lack of county control over such pets.
:Other animals that would no longer be welcome include:
:• Jaguars, leopards, tigers, cougars, panthers and cheetahs;
:• Poisonous reptiles and snakes that grow longer than eight feet.
:Three years ago in Columbia, snake aficionados protested when the city said the reptiles had to slither away. Columbia also bans wolverines, badgers, weasels, raccoons, skunks, bats, alligators, crocodiles, scorpions and some lizards.
:In Lexington, sentiment is strong among council members to minimize risks from unusual pets, Councilman Smokey Davis of Lexington said.
:More animals might be added as finishing touches are put on the restrictions, council members said. The final plan is expected to be ready this fall.
:The list so far "is just a starting point," Councilman Bruce Rucker of Swansea said. "Any exotic, dangerous animal is a concern."
:The limits would not apply to zoos and circuses.
:The restrictions would be accompanied by another measure setting stronger controls on dangerous dogs.
:County officials call increased animal restrictions necessary as growth transforms rural areas into suburbia.
