Rubber boas are the easiest snakes to handle, but they are like ball pythons in that they will stop eating (sometimes) for a while. As for a red snake...there is a color morph (blood red, I think) in corn snakes. Check out Kathy Love's web page. Corns are, usually, very clam snakes but fragile when young. Make sure your kids are gentle when they handle any snake and always watch them when they are handling a snake...this may sound like common sense, but I have heard of and seen kids treat pet reptiles very harshly.
