burrowing under HEAVY water bowl

I have two half-logs in his tank which has freshcare substrate. However, Barney prefers to burrow under the waterbowl which I try to sit on the bottom of the tank not on top of the freshcare. I would think it would smash the poor thing. But somehow he manages. So would you advise me to find another kind of hide for him? How about one of the clay saucers with edge broken out? He is a Mountain Kingsnake, Knoblochi male, about 3ft+ long and gentle as can be. Thanks.
