Well, snakes also don't live as long or healthy in the wild either.
And, catching something in the wild, where both predator and prey can get away if need be (for example the predator decides that particular mouse is too much for it) is different than in a caged area where prey can't escape, tends to make them more desperate, and predator can't escape especially if it's not hungry and the prey is (mice and rats have been known to eat unhungry snakes, or at least try at it).
