It really depends on the animal. Overall I must conclude that cottonmouths are a nastier snake by nature. They will actually come at you openmouthed. Copperheads are normally quite docile, often choosing to escape rather than try to bite. The one pictured though had to be meaner than most cottonmouths I find and definitely all nonvenomous snakes I have found, including watersnakes. They are fairly easy to handle with a hook, most I have caught tend to just sit on it. Andy
