I know several old books referred to them as cribos. I think it was in error. The only thing that makes common names "correct" is how many people use them. It's very common for snakes to have different regional common names...so it's always better to include the scentific name in the description of a snake. For the most part (In the US at least) we don't refer to Spilotes as cribos. The term cribo pretty much refers to the Central and South American subspecies of Drymarchon corais.

Spilotes pullatus subs. are called Tiger or Tropical "rat" snakes. Not a very good name...they not really rat snakes. Probably more closely related to racers than anything else.
I usually just refer to them as "Spilotes" ...b/c I refuse to call them rat snakes.
