i do think they need/want *some* social contact ... and for the igs who are an 'only child' like iZ, that means contact with a human has to replace contact with another ig ...

as far as *why* they would like it ... food and tub privledges come to mind ... iZ knows his way to the tub but doesn't know how to adjust the water and he knows food comes out of that big box in the kitchen but he can't figure out how to make it open on his own ... but aside from humans providing necessities, i *still* think they want/need *something* to interact with ... if for no other reason than to know they're not alone in the world ... plus, i think they like having us humans around because it proves to them that they *are* superior! (i'm joking and *not* joking at the same time!) iZ *knows* that he is the alpha ig around here! he likes me cuz he has trained me to know what time and what temp he likes to take his bath (and the washcloth/cape and the drying off towel must both be dark blue or forget it!) he likes me cuz since i'm *not* an ig, i'm warm all the time and i'm good to snuggle with after an evening of terrorizing the puppy ... and since i'm not an ig, i can give really good head/body rubs right where it itches from shedding ... he likes me cuz we've been thru alot together and he knows i'm his protector ...

i started out trying to give some rational reasons why igs would like people and have realized in writing that i don't think you *can* give "rational" reasons for having an emotion ... and my brain is thoroughly cramped up now so that ends MY 2 cents ... *grin*

(oh! and ditto to everything skinny said too!)
