Here is my second email to that comic, Peter Guren. Getting that canned response made me a little mad.

Peter Guren,

Thank you for responding to my email. However, it was just a canned response.
I don't know of the book "The International Encyclopedia of Pet Care". I would
think that any book that recommends lettuce as a main food source for any
animal would be highly suspect. I don't know of any animal that benefits from
eating lettuce. This food is a big no-no in the reptile world, bird world, and
rabbit world. If this book is the source of your studies, it might be wise to
consult several other books on the topic.

It was not David Alderton that made it look like the iguana was an easy animal
to take care of in a newpaper lots of people read, you did. Those 3 cons were
actually listed in the encyclopedia? An iguana can't jumprope and play fetch?
I don't believe it. Even if the author in an attempt at humor actually wrote
that, you were the person who picked out what pro's and con's to use and I
still think that they were very unwise choices. Con's that maybe should have
been considered: 1. Any reptile can carry salmonella, wash you hands after
any contact. 2. Taming of an iguana can take up to 6-9 months of constant
work with the animal. 3. Iguanas need very large cages and special UVB
lighting. 4. Iguana can't jumprope, but they can tail whip, crocodile roll,
bite, and scratch. 5. Please research the needs of iguana's before
purchasing. Those would have been much more responible items to bring up to
your readers.

Please do not refer me to someone else for what you choose to do.

Thank you,

Joan Appell
