I was similarly depressed when I purchased my new iguana (who was a little older than the usual babies you see in the stores, therefore was wild a little too long in my opinion) & he was not friendly & tolerant like my last was. Finally a few months later, he lets me pet him without smacking my hand away with his claw or kicking me with his foot or shaking his neck defiantly (he can have a major attitude) I tried the dominance method of holding him down until he calmed down (to show him who is boss) but this approach was not working so I just kept handling him a little each day & feeding him by hand-- slowly he came to accept me-- and although he doesn't enjoy being held, he likes climbing on me. He puffs out his dewlap a little upon my entrance from time to time, but he doesn't arch up or whip. Maybe one day he will be as tame as my last one (but he might always be a little more freaked out--I'm just happy I see an improvement) Be patient. Don't push to hard.
