I went ahead and drove the 45 minutes to check out LLL Reptile Supply today. I was starting to go a little stir crazy being confined to the house and wanted to check out their BDs, since they are so inexpensive.
I couldn't spend as much time as I would have liked because Sierra was being a pill.
But my impression of the store was pretty good. It is not as big as I expected after checking out their website. But the enclosures were all clean. The water and substrate all looked fresh and I was there around 4 pm. The animals appeared healthly and alert. All seemed to be in appropriate sized enclosures without a lot of animals crammed in them.
The staff was friendly and readily offered to answer any questions. Since I was there mainly to check out the BDs I asked about those. The lady I talked to readily admitted that there was no guarantee that after purchasing a hatchling Red/Gold X that they would develop any color phase. When I asked the age of the hatchlings she said they were all 3-6 weeks old, but they wouldn't sell any BD hatchling until it was established on crickets as opposed to just fruit flies. She said some of the BDs were breed by them and some were from other local breeders. I don't know why they are selling them for so little, maybe it is the age?
All and all I was fairly impressed. I managed (barely) to make it out of their without buying anything living. I did buy a new Reptisun 5.0 bulb. If you go to their website (you can access it through Kingsnake.com main page) they have them on super sale, any size, for $18.99.
