I've heard that plastic mesh is safer than wire. I used wire, mostly because twiggy was an abandoned iguana that had been dropped in someone I knows lap. he didn't have the space for him so I took him, I didn't have a cage that could hold him. I had to build one kind of quick, and at the time wire was all I could find. But twiggy scratched his nose a few time on the wire at first, and he has a couple scares from it. The next cage I build will be with plastic mesh instead of wire.
