do NOT use something *labeled* as a "spot light"!!! it will direct too much heat to just one point ...
other than that, no, you don't need a specific 'reptile light'!
i use a 250 watt red heat lamp ... (it's too bright to leave on at night but the white ones are just *too* bright) ... and like gina said, make sure to use a porcelin fixture to handle the wattage!
depending on how big an area you're trying to warm up, a regular old light bulb will work just fine too ...
