Joan,

What we try to do first is, to locate a new owner while the old owner continues to house the iguana, that is unless the owner is putting the iguanas health at risk. If the latter happens, we take the iguana to a foster parents house to work on getting him/her healthy again. Right now all of the iguanas available are healthy(knock on wood) but it isn't always the case, such as with Harry, who was left in a dark closet and fed.....as you know, cheese.
I wish I had a very large house and I would take in 50 plus iguanas, but since I don't, I try to do as much as possible to help out anyway I can with the rescue group and with 3 other Herp groups. Still I never feel like I've done enough for the cause and it always seems like there is so much more that needs to be done. It all leads back to why I feel the way I do about breeding iguanas whether for personal or business......more iguanas is more iguanas our group will have to deal with.....and remember....the ones we deal with are the ones that are alive.....who knows how many die each year.....we have people trying to find out. I'd say just in the state of VA....it can't be any less then 1,000 each year which die from poor knowledge of iguana care. We just don't hear about THEM.
I do hope that when you have time and feel like helping a group in your area, that you will. If there isn't a rescue group around there, you could start one. It's much easier when you have like 15 people who help out. Our group would be more then happy to answer any questions you might have if you ever decided to start one. Being a member of a local Herp group can start the ball rolling too.
Harry's Dad
