In Reply to: Gravid Female Suppliments - Survey posted by John on May 05, 1999 at 04:59:12:
My green iguana Sammy lays infertile eggs every year without any problems.
This last time was her fourth successful egglaying, she lay 62 eggs.
Trust me, the best "supplement" to give a gravid iguana is lots and lots of
direct sunlight, all year round. Especially when they are under 2 years old. Up to and before their very first egglaying
at 17 or 18 months is the more crucial time.
I have never given my gravid female any calcium supplement of any kind, just lots of leafy
greens before her appetite wanes and lots and lots of good sunshine.
Real sunshine and a decent diet are much much more important that supplements. Calcium supplements should be used however
if the iguana was not getting much direct sun.
Captive females have so many problems with eggbinding because
most of them have been deprived of real sunlight. Iguanas in the wild
bask for hours and hours everyday. There really is something magical about the sun, that
no artifical UV tube can duplicate.
Good luck!
