yes you can + *should* trim them ... in the wild, they get filed down on their own, in capitivity, they need to be trimmed so they don't get caught and possibly ripped out (not to mention, slice your arms up!)
how big is your ig? if it's very small, you might be able to get away with just 'filing' them with an emory board to get those sharp little point off ... a bigger ig, you'll need to use a clippers ... i use those big *people* nail clippers on iZ's and *then* file them smooth with an emory board ... a trick to see how short to trim them is to take a little flashlight and shine it thru the nail ... you'll be able to see exactly where the vein is that way ... (works on puppies + bunnies too!)
whenever you're holding your ig, 'play' with it's toes a bit to get him used to the feeling of you touching his toes and it *not* hurting! i did that with iZ when he was little and now that he's *big* he is still very good (usually!) about getting his nails trimmed *grin*
