: I need a pick-me-up. A while ago Mel ripped out a nail. I keep them nicely trimmed but somehow she managed to get one caught in a crack on one of her logs. She ripped the whole nail off, just leaving the bed, which bled like crazy. Since this was at night it resulted in a frantic telephone call the 24 hour vet hospital. We received instructions over the phone. For the next week I had to clean the nail bed with peroxide and put antibotic cream on it, then try to wrap it in such a way the dressing would stay on. I felt horrible about what happened. Mel handled the whole thing extremely well considering how painful it looked. She sat still through all her treatments.

: Now today I did what I normally do. I gave Mel her bath. She did her business and climbed out when through. I let her roam around while I disinfected and scrubbed the tub, prepared her salad, changed her water, and cleaned up the mess all this leaves behind. She hadn't been roaming long when I noticed a spot of blood on the carpet where she had been. Investigation quickly revealed the stubby nail she had managed to grow back was bleeding. It is still intact, although a portion of it somehow broke off. I checked everywhere I knew her to have been and cannot determine how this happened. Ken (the other half) says it was probably the carpet. But it is not really plush, or looped or anything.

: Any how I feel terrible again. I have ripped off nails down to the start of the nail bed and know how painfully sensitive the nail bed can be. I can only imagine how it must feel to have to walk on it. She once again had to sit through the peroxide cleaning, antibiotic and my fumbling attempts to bandange her narrow toe. And we will have to do this for the next several days.

: I try to be careful. How frustrating, I have to let her roam to exercise, yet now I worried.

: Kayo and poor Mel (my extremely patient and understanding of my failings iguana)

Kayo, please don't feel so bad,,kids just seem to get into a little scrape now and then. You are right, she does need excersize and we have tile flooring, the kids slip and slid on it,,so what can you do??Just keep doing what your doing,,it will grow back.Mel good baby, here's some hibiscus flowers for the good patiecent(sp)and give mom some tongue flicks so she feels better.
