Hello Bluereed. Gideon is lucky to have found such a caring new friend. I too have had a heck of a time finding spiny-tail info., but what I have 'heard' (i.e. not proper research) is that they are, as Dave says, completely carnivorous. The spinys I know eat pinky mice *gro-o-ss* dusted with vitamins & calcium all the time, with very few or no veggies.
That poor soul, with light all the time!!!
It might be an idea to see a HERP vet who has experience with spiny iggy's. He may have some correctable deficiencies, and some MBD. It's possible he should be close to 4' long now. Are you able to build him an enclosure? There are quite a few sites out there with the how-to's, as well as the people on this forum.
*Just a totally personal thing*, but I wouldn't change his diet drastically all at once. I think that would be stressful for him. Also if you lived on chocolate all your life, and someone suddenly gave you steak and potatoes just imagine what would happen to your digestive system!!
He likes his belly rubbed?? How cute! That proves you are a true papa.
Best of Luck to you!
Wendy.
