i never heard that about male humans should have a female ig .... the opposite is somewhat true (that male igs will react to their female owners hormonal cycles ....)
if you get a younger/smaller ig, you won't be able to tell which sex it is ... usually you can't tell for sure til they're about 2 yrs old ... i'd recommend starting with an iglet tho, a smaller one, AFTER you do *extensive* reading!
igs are great but they DO require pretty special care and it's not always easy OR CHEAP ... and they DO need check ups from the vet shortly after you get them! make sure you take that into consideration! it's NOT always easy to find a vet who really knows iguanas!!

really, do some research BEFORE you get an ig! (it'll save you alot of headache to be prepared for needing a spare bedroom for the ig by the time he's 4 years old!)
