In Reply to: babyherp ... what about silvadene (sp?)??? posted by iZ's mom on April 03, 1999 at 10:03:38:
Iz's mom...no silvadene is perscribed cuz its an antibiotic and very powerful. Its the best you can get! I think like a 2oz jar cost me 16.00 once when my snake needed it...to help heal some sutures he had. Anyway..zinc oxide is that stuff surfers put on their noses! It has alot of healing, drying properties and useful for skin irritations & eruptions. Its kind of like a poor man's silvadene. Its best (as is silvadene) in cream form NOT ointment form...the emollients/ petroleum in most ointments( including antibacterial) have been found to actually prevent healing and may actually be more of an irritant than anything else and we wonder why our Igs take soooo long to heal! . I still use polysporin & neoporin for alot of things especially wounds...but always have zinc oxide on hand for other skin related problems like burns, bacterial skin eruptions especially after a course of systemic antibiotics ! Maybe use it sometime for Iz and see what ya think ...and if you can get silvadene by the truckload grab it...IT IS a miracle drug!
