Mexican Spiny Tail
(Ctenosaura acanthurus)
Ranges thru E. Mexico, from mid-Tamaulipas south to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Veracruz west 300-500 miles. Males can reach up to 140 cm, w/ large females at 100 cm. Coloration is variable: males are usually black, w/ or w/o bands that range from partially mottled to large, clean white or yellow; females are usually black w/ more mottling of bright white or light yellow. Adult males have large crests of 2 cm or more. They are large, very active and love rocky hot areas, often w/in areas w/ high human populations. This species and C. pectinata ("black iguana") are very similar.
