Roses require a lot of work and depending on where you live and the moisture you receive, they need to be sprayed weekly if you get a lot of rain. I am referring to the hybrid teas, multifloras, and grandifloras that you buy at nurseries. They are very susceptible to black spot which is more prevalent with high humidity and rain. They also get lots of bugs from Japanese Beetles to aphids. I would talk to a good nurseryman and explain what you want them for--there may be some rose bushes that are less susceptible.
Now for my hibiscus story--since I live in PA, I can't grow them outside but I do have one plant that I have had for about 6 years that I keep inside. It blooms once every 3-4 years. Well, the last time it bloomed (1 blossom) I took Meggy over so she could see a tropical flower and whoomph, she gobbled it down in one bite! That was my introduction to the iguana hot fudge sundae!
