Quick ... what's the most frequently 'abandoned' herp of late?
NEWS 12 (Long Island, New York) 22 April 03 Unwanted animal crisis at reptile museum
Hicksville: The Long Island Reptile Museum is having trouble taking care of too many unwanted animals. The museum has been forced to care for reptiles dumped at the front door of the building by pet owners.
The Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) received complaints that the 500 animals at the museum were overcrowded and not being properly fed. They searched the facility on Tuesday. The SPCA found the animals were being fed properly, but the problem was people dumping a high amount of unwanted reptiles onto the museum. This week alone, 22 animals were left on the museum's front steps.
The SPCA said it is moving three alligators, 16 iguanas and a couple of snakes to a new facility upstate. They urge folks to think twice before getting a reptile as a pet. The SPCA will also give the museum 30 days to improve their conditions. Otherwise, some unwanted reptiles might be put to sleep.
