LOL!!! Well, he's partly right, as both herps and herpes stem from the same Greek root word. ;)
A herpetologist is a biologist who specializes in the study of amphibians and/or reptiles. At the Resources section of my site, you'll find a list of colleges and universities with herp faculty and programs, along with suggestions for finding others. As I recall, the east coast is well represented, so you shouldn't have a problem staying on your side of the Mississippi. ;)
