Iguanas--male and female--are highly territorial. They are typically kept in enclosures that are too small for the size they are at the moment, which means the enclosures get relatively smaller each month as the iguana continues to grow.
When you insert your hand into an alreaduy too small enclosure, you are invading your iguana's territory. The smaller the perceived territory, the more vigorously intrusions will be fought.
If you haven't already done so, please read the Basic Cage Design Problems article at my site. So you can adequately plan for growth (and so build an enclosure your iguana can grow into, rather than out of), see the growth norm table in Iguana Age and Expected Size article.
Keep in mind, too, that iguanas may exhibit more territoriality as they approach and reach sexual maturity (~12 months of age) and during breeding season (first onset at ~18 months of age in healthy iguanas, then annually thereafter). This increases the risk of the human getting nailed (well, toothed ;) when reaching into their iguana's enclosure.
