My iguana does the same thing, and after 6 months it still hasn't changed. I figured out that the best thing for the iguana and for me was to just let it leave the cage on its own. I usually open his cage and then sit in my room reading or on the computer. He eventually comes out. Neither of us have to fight, and he is much calmer, like you said, a kitten, once he is out in the familiar room. Hope that helps!
