:Amazing how powerful nature can be.
And how incredibly blinkered humans can be about some of nature's tiniest wonders: the microorganisms that inhabit us and other vertebrates and invertebrates.
I just recently finishing reading Parasite Rex, by Carl Zimmer. An excellent--and excellently written--look at parasites, their adaptation to their hosts, and role in evolving host behavior. I'm looking forward to reading some of his other books, especially At the Water's Edge, about how microscopic aquatic lifeforms moved onto land...and back again.
Another interesting read, especially for those with Lyme disease, is Arno Karlen's Biography of a Germ, the germ in question being Borrelia burgdorferi, a particularly talented spirochete, and how our alteration of our physical world has aided Bb to add H. sapiens to its already impressive list of hosts.
