Meggy just rides in the car

I put her leash on her and off we go. In winter I keep her under my coat until the car warms up. Her favorite place to ride is on the back window ledge. I put newspapers on the ledge and she loves it! (I wasn't so smart at first but after several poops on the ledge, I smartened up!) She is a great traveler. I did have a funny experience once though. I was driving 75 MPH on I81 when she decided to climb on top of my head. She was perched there and this car started to pass, slammed on the brakes, and when I looked over, tail draped beside my face, they were howling at us!
Dumb question--why do you need to put them in something after they are older? Meggy is so well-behaved that she just hangs out.
