I do not support a ban of any specific pet outright. I do agree however that stricter importation regulations need to be put into effect.
My biggest reason for NOT supporting bans is simply it opens up the door. Take for example the NY ban which bans all Iguanids. While that also includes Anoles. Also the banning of any single pet species/breed opens the doors for further bans. Personally being the owner of an american bulldog I not only have to check reptile laws, but also breed specific legislation regarding dogs. Altho mine has been thru training and is under my control at all times an uneducation cop can easily mistake my American Bulldog for a Pit Bull which is banned in that area. And for every idiot who owns a python that does some form of damage there is one good person out there, that practices proper care.
I do not trust my legislators to see the logic in this. I work with reptile phobes and boy do I get nailed with questions everytime something bad happens involving the a snake or lizard. Trying to explain that intellegent husbandry is the primary thing when dealing with reptiles to people who HATE reptiles is NOT an easy thing to do.
I think events like the two I am planning on participating in are a great start. More sale type events should create an education section that they donate space to non-profit groups like rescues or herp clubs, where people can come and get info BEFORE They buy. Another thing would be pet stores realizing the issue at hand and begining an adoption program rather than a sale program.
But not an outright ban. I dont trust my government that much especially with groups like HSUS and their money.
