Something is upsetting them. Mice do the same thing. As horrific as it sounds to us it's really a basic survival instinct. The mother feels the babies are going to be killed and eaten anyway so she does it to reserve the nourishment for herself to produce another litter when it is safer and the litter more likely to survive. Nobody ever said Nature was always pretty.
