No, it doesnt smell bad.I put my whole head inside the shavings' plastic bag and my eyes didnt water and the smell was not strong either.Perhaps the pine shavings that are sold where you live have some chemical component added to the natural wood.

the chlorophyl litter I have seen is made of pine. Pine is suspected of, like cedar, being toxic to reptiles. It doesn't seem to bother rodents. I keep mice and use the stuff myself. But open a bag and take a deep sniff. Almost makes your eyes water!
