I was recently at a reptile show, looking for exactly what you are, that is, cool logs or branches for Bud's enclosure. I found this really big stand, selling all sorts of grapevine, bark, etc. I went up to the person running the booth, and asked how they had disinfected the piece I wanted to buy.
"Disinfect? What do you mean? We spray them with water every once in a while, to keep them humid..."
Wow. Ask before you buy. Another method I've heard of for disinfecting is to bake the wood in your oven. You can saw your chosen log apart to make it fit in the oven (or tub, for bleach) and bolt it back together again after disinfecting.
