Putting aside the arguement that an aquarium is not going to cut it for long, unless you haver a room with a high ambient temp I doubt a 50 watt is going to do it. I have my pythons in a 55 gal tank and I use a 150 watt CHE! This keeps the temps in one end at mid to upper 90'sF and the far end at 75F. You may have to experiment with wattages to find what you need in your situation. And use regular incandescents for your tests, they are a lot cheaper! I would start out with a 100 watt and go from there. You can get a great little thermometer at Wally world or lowes etc for around 10 bucks that has a remote sensor that you can put anywhere in the tank to get a reading. It also has a min/max feature that will tell you just how much the emps fluctuate over the course of time.
