I was thinking about this very thing just yesterday! I was thinking about this animal I'm pondering adopting from an abysmal petshop, and the person who posted "Am I doing the right thing?" a while ago.
It's interesting that pet buyers, especially parents who are buying them for children, don't look at iguanas and other herps as they would any other product. Is it because they think an animal is more than merchandise, and shouldn't be objectified, or because they think it's less important than other kinds of merchandise?
It's kind of understandable that people who dote on iguanas don't think this way often, but maybe the way to reach people is to stress that they should be incensed that a store would offer such sub-par merchandise to them, passing it off as acceptable. I guess this might require laws about standards of quality for pet-store animals, but has anyone ever called the Better Business Bureau about injured animals in a petstore? If so, what happened?
