:so, if anyone is still reading this... here comes the heresy. Like has been done with so many other animals, would a contolled program of resposible captive breeding potentially solve these issues? If, for instance, everyone on this site agreed to continue to adopt unwanted iguanas and NEVER buy from an importer, and the only time we bought a baby was a quality raised CB, it would accomplish the same that we are now.
I have already made this decision. In fact I have never bought an iguana in my life! All have been rescues. I keep the worst off ones here at my home and adopt out what I can.
The worst part if the farming companies are able to TECHNICALLY claim captive bred even though the farm situation is pretty much a wild environment. In theory your idea would work. We herpers do not seem to prone to self regulation however. And I am worried that eventually someone would regulate us. Actually your theory would be wonderful as an across the board issue. It would help the wild populations hopefully flourish a bit better than many already are.
:Whew... that was cathartic. Thanks for reading, and I hope I do not get banned for throwing the possibility out. =) Just kidding.
I sincerly hope you are kidding. There are several reasons people get banned and brining up a controversial topic in a civil tone will never result in banning.
