Gallon wise? Beats the hell outta me. Most people here go by measurements, since it is usually the best way to know how properly sized the enclosure is anyways. U can have a 100 gallon tank and still may have a not proper proportioned cage.
Even if they reach a mere 12-16 inches of total length, these guys actually need BIG CAGES! How big? This where u may not like it:
though as a minimal it should be 3 feet long, 3 deep, and minimun 2-3 feet high, the best measurements for dipsosaurus is 5 feet long, 3-4 feet deep, and 3 feet high.
These are active desert animals, that require very high basking temperatures. As a result, due to such high basking temps, the cage HAS TO BE large enough for it not to overheat. That way, one extremety can be very warm, and the other much cooler for the animal to theromregulate to its liking.
They do not climb much, as you probably know, so 2 or 3 feet will suffice. A lot of folks think you can house these small iguanas in a fish tank aquaria. Yeah right.
Like the frilled lizard, argus monitor, and other desert dwelling lizards, they need a lot of room, a lot of heat, and ample space to behave as naturally as possible.
Gallons won't get you very far. It has to meet the recommended measurements.
***People use gallons for geckoes or anoles.
For medium-large lizards, you pull out the yard stick. ***
Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any mor equestions.
Regards,
