Dear Varenus,
When you say "aquired" and "Ctenosaura" in the same sentence, I naturally assume that you bought him from a breeder. But if he is a rescue, then my experience may offer some reassurance, even though my animal is a green iguana.
When I rescued Bud, his back legs were totally paralyzed. He had severe metabolic bone disease, with many, many broken bones. Yet he was fat and sleek, despite his previous owner apparently feeding him nothing but grass and lettuce. At the time, I didn't know what a healthy iguana gut felt like, so in my confusion, I took him to the emergency veterinarian. Even she, a NON-reptile-expert, could tell that he was impacted, and she gave him an enema, which flushed out the blockage in under 15 minutes. He then started to use his back legs and now is almost totally recovered.
My (very limited) understanding of what happened (and remember too, a non-herp vet explained this to me so I don't know the specifics too well) is that a severe intestinal blockage can press against the nerves that control the limbs, creating what looks like a neurological problem. Nobody was as surprised as I was when the vet gave Bud's "paralyzed" back foot a little pinch and he gave her back a mighty kick and a nasty look! What I said can't be repeated in this forum! Then again, maybe it's not that technical; would you want to move if you were this severely constipated? :)
And then AGAIN, get your animal to the vet as soon as possible, even an emergency vet, if they have any kind of reptile experience. Just this week one of our friends on this forum lost an ig to apparent kidney failure. One of the first (and last) signs he reported of this were that the iguana wasn't using its front legs. :(
Let us know what the vet says!
:i recently aquired a young(5 mo.) Ctenosaura similis and i have just noticed an odd bump toward the vent on the dorsal side. however the lil' guy is till eating. i havent noticed any waste though. any comments or suggestions?
