I have been to this store on a couple of occasions. In the past under a different name and possibly some other owners the conditions were worse than Petco. However, new owners, which did include some of the former owners, seemed to have cleaned up the place. I don't know how they really stayed in business.

There were quite a few animals and a lot of cages.

According to some reliable reports from my friends at more established stores, this particular store had been closed a minimum of three times by the county health department for health violations.

The food (I didnt see any greens, just things like cabbage ) and habitat of the iguanas was not that good. I don't know about the other animals since I wasnt there during feeding times.

Since part of my job is designing fire and life safety systems, I am curious about the circumstances of the fire and why there wasn't a fire notification system at the store. Also, since there was a previous fire next door a short time ago, why weren't fire code requirement enforced. It is the responsibility of the building owner to install and maintain fire suppression and fire notification systems throughout the building.

None the less, there may be more to the story, which may or may not get published.
