You can get an ultrasonic humidifier.

Yes, it would be a good idea...keeps moisture in better and helps prevent as many nail and facial injuries. My cage only has the hardware cloth on the top where the lights are. Remember, you will have to recheck all your temps after adding the plexi as it will hold heat better and temps can increase. Don't cook him! Good luck.
