Both mercury and mercury vapor are toxic to humans and animals. Here's some more info: http://www.anapsid.org/mercuryvapor2.html

I remember my mom telling me that before people knew mercury was so toxic, they used to let kids play with it in school science classes! She even did, in her elementary school!
