I don't mean to discourage you, but look forward to being bitten quite a few times during this process! I've been around iguanas for most of my life, and have helped tame a few. My female Buddy was always pretty laid back, so I didn't have that problem with her. But then there's my friend's little guy... he's about 7" STV and has bitten me hard enough to do considerable damage 4 times now. In fact, Sunday evening he bit the palm of my hand TWICE and actually broke that thick skin! He is considerably calmer now once we get him out of his cage. The trick is to be persistent... if he bites you once and you stop trying to handle him, he'll realize that biting makes you go away, and will keep doing it. If he bites you and it does no good (or tail-whips you for that matter) then over time he'll learn that it isn't going to work.
If you understand that philosophy, you can use it in a lot of different ways. The way we get Chong (my friend's mean little guy) out of his cage now is to hold a collard green leaf a few inches from him... he starts walking toward it and we pull it back a little bit. We use that method to coax him onto our other arm, and once he's on just slowly lift him out. He freaks out at first, but usually calms down. He has started to make the connection between my friend and food, and is starting to trust him more because of that. My friend brings food into the room, and Chong goes to the front of his basking-ledge and waits.
