Maybe you could set up a basking spot or something that was high enough up that it would feel just as safe going to it as under the stairs. Also you could leave a radio on so it gets used to human sounds?
If you have a heating pad maybe you could put that out by the dryer and see if he’ll stay on that instead of going back under the stairs to sleep at night. If it works it shouldn’t be “too hard” to get him in the night while he’s sleeping.
